 More Kennywood Memories
By : Charles J., Jr. Jacques, Karen Morrison (Designer), Carl O. Hughes (Preface)
More Kennywood Memories Kennywood, celebrathing its 100th birthday this year, has been part of the author's life for the better part of the last 50 years. Jacques is the park's unofficial historian. In 1982 he wrote Kennywood:Roller Coaster Capital of the World, which has sence sold some 23,000 copies. This summer he published his second books about Kennywood and the company's other parks: More Kennywood Memories. Jacques 58, grew up in nearby Natrona Heights, Pa., and first visited the park in 1947, but it was in the '70s that he became interested in Kennywood's history, along with the histories of other parks. His reserch involved hundreds of trips to Kennywood and sifting through old correspondence, conducting dozens of interviews, takening hundreds of pictures, reviewing company documents and photos. Jacques is an obessive researcher: the appendix to his new book notes that in 1932 the park's dance pavilion was remodeled, in 1940 it snowed on opening day, and this yer the Thunderbolt (coaster) got new headlights.

Ohio's Amusement Parks in Vintage Postcards
By : David Francis, Diane Francis
Ohio's Amusement Parks in Vintage Postcards By 1912, there were 54 amusement parks in Ohio. The parks came in all sizes, and featured such attractions as the Flying Ponies carousel, the Chute-the-Chutes water ride, and the Cyclone, Racer, and Dip-the-Dips roller coasters. Some, like Clevelandís White City, seemed to be courted by bad luck from the beginning, and folded after only a few disappointing seasons. Others, like Youngstownís Idora Park, enjoyed long lives and fostered beloved memories, but eventually closed down in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. A few, like Sanduskyís Cedar Point, have grown to be considered among the greatest amusement parks in the world. But most are now forgotten.

Palisades Amusement Park: A Century of Fond Memories
By : Vince Gargiulo, Edward Malillo, Richard H. Haufe
Palisades Amusement Park: A Century of Fond Memories The amusement park that grew on the New Jersey Palisades overlooking the Hudson River could always be identified by its trademark blend of "entertainment, nature, and colorful attractions." In 1898, a picnic ground was turned into a paradise for some 300 million visitors who thereafter flocked to Palisades Park before its closure in 1971. The Palisades became one of America's favorite amusement parks, and its owners had a knack for letting the park reflect the culture of the nation. The austerity of the 1920s saw Kewpie-doll prizes replaced by coffee and sugar; the 1940s promoted beauty pageants such as Miss Eyeglass-wearing; the 1950s saluted rock and roll; the 1960s gave rise to rocket ships. Fire and accidental deaths marred the park's history, but the ....

The Kid of Coney Island: Fred Thompson and the Rise of American Amusements
By : Woody Register
The Kid of Coney Island: Fred Thompson and the Rise of American Amusements A generation before Walt Disney, Fred Thompson was the "boy-wonder" of American popular amusements. At the turn of the 20th century, Thompson's entrepreneurial drive made him into an entertainment mogul who helped to define the popular culture of his day. In this lively biography, Woody Register tells Thompson's remarkable story and examines the transformation of commerce and entertainment as American society moved into an era of mass marketing and large-scale corporate enterprise.
