Alternate Route: Toward Efficient Urban Transportation
|
| By : Clifford Winston, Chad Shirley |
This book develops an alternative solution to urban transportation dilemmas that is based on economic analysis while remaining realistic about political constraints on policy-makers. The authors estimate that efficient pricing and service policies could save more than $10 billion in annual net benefits over current practices, but argue that powerful, entrenched political and institutional forces will continue to thwart efficient economic solutions to improve urban transportation. They believe, however, that some form of privatization would likely improve social welfare more than an efficient public sector system. Facing fewer operating restrictions, greater economic incentives, and stronger competitive pressures, private suppliers could significantly improve the efficiency of urban operations and offer services that are more responsive to the needs of all travelers.

Asphalt Nation: How the Automobile Took over America, and How We Can Take It Back
|
| By : Jane Holtz Kay |
Today our world revolves around the car - as a nation, we spend eight billion hours a year stuck in traffic. In Asphalt Nation, Jane Holtz Kay effectively calls for a revolution to reverse our automobile-dependency. Citing successful efforts in places from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon, Kay shows us that radical change is not impossible by any means. She demonstrates that there are economic, political, architectural, and personal solutions that can steer us out of the mess. Asphalt Nation is essential reading for everyone interested in the history of our relationship with the car, and in the prospect of returning to a world of human mobility.

Design of Multimodal Transport Networks: A Hierarchical Approach (Trail-Thesis Series)
|
| By : Rob Van Nes |
This doctoral dissertation investigates the consequences of multimodal traveling for designing multimodal transport networks. It describes the characteristics of multimodal travel today and assesses its future potential. The analysis focuses on the way transport networks are organized in hierarchical network structures and determines the main mechanisms leading to these hierarchical network structures. Furthermore, an analysis is made of the role in a multimodal transport system of transport services other than private transport or public transport.

The Transit Metropolis: A Global Inquiry
|
| By : Robert Cervero |
The Transit Metropolis provides practical lessons on how North American cities can manage sprawl and haphazard highway development by creating successful mass transit systems. While many books discuss the need for a sustainable transportation system, few are able to present examples of successful systems and provide the methods and tools needed to create such a system. This book is a unique and invaluable resource for transportation planners and professionals, urban planners and designers, policymakers and students of planning and urban design.
