Indianapolis Union Station: Trains, Travelers & Changing Times
|
| By : James R. Hetherington |
Jim Hetherington has combed the collections of the Indiana Historical Society and memorabilia of some of the most devoted train buffs in the nation to come up with this historically accurate and well written “picture book.” Avid admirer of Union Station Darryl Jones has photographed the grand old lady of train depots in many moods and through several transformations in the past two decades. This is the story of famous trains like the “Spirit of St. Louis,” of people who used the trains: of soldiers of World Wars I and II.

New York Central's Stations and Terminals
|
| By : Geoffrey H. Doughty |
The great stations and terminals built by the New York Central Railroad during the first half of the century became indexes of corporate and civic pride, with the Great Steel Fleet sparing no expenses to infuse art, style, and function into celebrated designs like Manhattan's Grand Central Station. An engaging text incorporates a gallery of interior and exterior photography to examine the terminals which the New York Central built in major cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, as well as along intermediate stops such as Albany. The author also examines the effect of the New York Central's stunning announcement in 1956 that it would sell off 406 stations across its 10,000-mile system.

New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subway
|
| By : Christopher Payne |
All over New York City, hidden behind unassuming historic facades, sits the gigantic machinery of the power stations that once moved the subways. For over a century, the 125,000-pound converters and related equipment of the substations remained largely unchanged, but in 1999 the last manually operated substation was shut down and since then they have been systematically dismantled and sold as scrap. In 1997, author Christopher Payne was introduced to the substations by an official of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Power Division. Since then, he has rushed to photograph, draw, and write the history of these amazing buildings and their machines before they are completely gone.

Not a Station but a Place
|
| By : Judith Clancy, M. F. K. Fisher |
M.F.K. Fisher's essay on the Gare de Lyon and its magnificent Train Bleu restaurant introduces Judith Clancy's 32 drawings and collages (accompanied by the artist's notes) of that lovely Paris railroad station where trains leave to and arrive from the south of France. It could just as easily have been titled The Best Bread in Paris since the food, architecture and atmosphere of the station's Train Bleu have been emphasized by both artist and author, the latter calling it "one of the most amazing public diningrooms I have ever seen, or even imagined."

Railroad Stations
|
| By : Brian Solomon |
Railroad stations are gateways to cities and towns, and, as such, they have been built as elaborately detailed showplaces, displaying the best a town or city has to offer. Author Brian Solomon, a writer, photographer, and train expert, has written an engrossing and beautifully illustrated architectural history of railroad stations. Railroad Stations offers not just a history of the station building but discusses how each place came to be built and the role each station has played in its community, from grand stations in the urban centers of the world to humbler ones in the small towns across North America.
