The Age of Steam: The Locomotives, the Railroads, and Their Legacy
|
| By : John Westwood |
The power and romance of the age of steam are captured in this vividly illustrated chronicle of the steam trains and railways that forged a new era in transportation from 1830 onward. Presenting the first opportunity for long-distance travel powered by machines, the emergence of the train had an unprecedented influence on the development of industry, social history, emigration, leisure patterns, and military history. The steam locomotive was, in short, an engine for change whose impact around the world was both profound and indelible. Written by well-known author John Westwood, this handsome volume features over 250 full-color and historic sepia photographs.

The Allegheny Lima's Finest
|
| By : Gene Huddleston |
The Allegheny was perhaps the finest high horsepower steam locomotive ever built which unfortunately never reached its full potential due to the arrival of the diesel engine. Although its size and potential is compared to the Union Pacific Big Boy, the Allegheny was not without controversy - which added to an inaccurate comparison of the two largest high horsepower steam locomotives. Everyone who looks at details closely- cab window, stack height, eccentric crank, air tank end, cab construction, trailing truck casting and bell mounting- will love the attention dedicated to these features and their evolution in the Allegheny as presented in this book. This book brings together the best of the railfan photographer, the railway and the builder. The Allegheny finally receives its due!

The Heritage of North American Steam Railroads: From the First Days of Steam Power to the Present
|
| By : Brian Solomon |
A freelance writer/photographer and railroad enthusiast who is also a former editor of Pacific Railnews and the author of The American Steam Locomotive, Solomon presents an illustrated history of steam railroads in the United States and Canada. He surveys the beginnings of railroads in North America, how they became the dominant mode of transportation, and how they went into decline after World War II, focusing much of his book on the development and operation of various steam and early diesel engine types. While his discussions of steam and early diesel are the strength of the book, Solomon also briefly touches on electrification, stations, and trolleys and interurban systems. A final chapter includes information on various current preservation efforts and museums that document the history of railroading. Some 200 illustrations and maps add nicely to this solid introduction to the history of railroads. Recommended for all public libraries that need a recent introduction to the subject.

The Last Steam Railroad in America: From Tidewater to Whitetop
|
| By : O. Winston Link (Photographer), Thomas H. Garver |
From 1955 to 1960, commercial photographer Link devoted all the time he could to the Norfolk and Western Railway, which ran four lines in the upper South from its hub in Roanoke, Virginia. With the company's cooperation, he recorded what made it special--it was the last U.S. railway to operate with steam engines. Moreover, as Thomas H. Garvey imparts in the generous accompanying text here, Link worked in ways then as rare as steam locomotives--with large, tripod-mounted view cameras and, because he preferred working at night when he could exert more control over lighting, he used scores of flashbulbs that were set off precisely at the time calculated to allow for a particular exposure. One album of those night images, Steam, Steel & Stars (1987), has appeared, and more of them are here, along with many daytime views and a little sampling of the few color pictures he made (including the only two color shots taken at night)....
