Norfolk & Western Y-Class Articulated Steam Locomotives
By : William E. Warden
Norfolk & Western Y-Class Articulated Steam Locomotives The N&Ws Y-class 2-8-8-2 compound articulated steam locomotives were, in their later types, arguably the best compound locomotives ever built. This book explores the class thoroughly. It is a complete revision of the 64-page softbound book released in 1993 as "N&W's Magnificent Mallets." Completely re-worked and DOUBLED in size, it has more than 70% new or changed photos. Additional text has been added on the Y-Class Mallets, and an appendix chapter has been added to illustrate some of the N&W's other classes of articulated steam. Additional side-bar text is presented, as well as mechanical drawings. Photos are reproduced in larger format, which will prove very useful for modelers.

Set Up Running: The Life of a Pennsylvania Railroad Engineman 1904-1949
By : John W. Orr
Set Up Running: The Life of a Pennsylvania Railroad Engineman 1904-1949 Set Up Running tells the story of a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive engineer, Oscar P. Orr, who operated steam-powered freight and passenger trains throughout Central Pennsylvania and South Central New York. From 1904 to 1949, Orr sat at the controls of many famous steam locomotives; moved trains loaded with coal, perishables, and other freight; and encountered virtually every situation a locomotive engineer of that era could expect to see. This compelling railroad history will enthrall not only everyone in the railroad community but also the general reader interested in railroads and trains, past and present.

 Steam Beneath the Red Star
By : Ron Ziel
Steam Beneath the Red Star From WWII into the '70s the communist countries, lacking capital for dieselization, continued to build & operate steam locomotives. This presented a powerful attraction for steam fans. The authors, certifiable foamers, yielded in spite of the paranoid restrictions upon photography. This heavily illustrated (456 photos, 88 in color) survey of the Soviet Union, E. Europe, China, Korea, Vietnam and Cuba is a unique record of the waning years of a power source then virtually extinct in the West. They describe their tribulations, the locomotions, and present fair to excellent photos of the nostalgic beasts. A fine treatment for the fan and the student of transportation.
