By : Tamara Geisert (Illustrator), James L. Lonon, James W. Mintz (Editor)
Tall Tales of the Rails: On the Carolina, Clinchfield, & Ohio sit back, relax, and let's begin our trip on the old-fashioned train. We will start at Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and won't stop until we reach Spartan-burg, South Carolina." This is really a trip back in time, centered around one of the most remarkable railroad lines in the eastern part of the U.S. Making brief commentary about specific locations along the scenic route, Lonon includes some interesting bits of history. Along with a brief biographical sketch of George L. Carter, there are brief sketches about J. Fred Johnson and John B. Dennis and their association with him in building the railroad. The author shares numerous anecdotes. Some are from his childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains, through which the train ran....

The Green Bay and Western: From Moguls to Alcos
By : Stan Mailer, Robert L. Hundman (Editor), Cathy H. Lee (Editor)
The Green Bay and Western: From Moguls to Alcos Green Bay and Western Railroad began its long and once-troubled life just after the Civil War, in an attempt to capture trans-Mississippi trade for its fabulously wealthy owners. Competitive, modern and solvent today, GB&W finally threw off its luckless past in mid-20th Century, emerging as a time-saving bridge route between northwest and eastern states. The struggles of the smaller road west of Lake Michigan to exploit its advantageous shortcut and the coming of the prosperous automobile age are detailed with rare photos collected over many years. The road's handsome steam power is carefully illustrated from selected photos in the author's collection.

The Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company
By : Matthew Bumgarner
The Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company On November 11, 1899, the first regular train of the Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company ran on newly laid narrow gauge tracks from Lawndale to Shelby, NC. Major H.F. Schenck's dream of a railroad to circumvent the muddy wagon roads to his mill had finally been realized. Hauling lumber, raw materials, fertilizer, and finished mill products as well as passengers, the "Lawndale Dummy" connected the isolated Carolina foothills to the rest of the world. The road followed the First Broad River valley for less than 12 miles and became a legend in the area as much for the people involved as for the diminutive cars and locomotives. Farmers in their fields grew used to the chugging of the engines, the whistles and bells, and the thick smoke and cinders. By 1943, the line was truly history, its work taken over by cars and trucks. But memories remain, stories become embellished, details forgotten. For those who let the coal smoke get in their blood, the Lawndale Railway will always be an important part of North Carolina heritage.

The Louisiana and Arkansas Railway: The Story of a Regional Line
By : James R. Fair
The Louisiana and Arkansas Railway: The Story of a Regional Line The story of L&A is largely a collective biography of William Edenborn, William Buchanan, and Harvey Couch - the men who built and extended the line by shrewd acquisitions. These successful businessmen combined wisdom, foresight, and propensity for hard work - traits they had first demonstrated in other careers - with their longtime love for trains. Each applied remarkable talents for industry and commerce toward the development of L&A to mold it into a model regional railroad. In this first history of the L&A, Fair traces the line's development from the early boom days of railroading to its dissolution in the modern era of takeovers.

The Ma & Pa: A History of the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad
By : George W. Hilton
The Ma & Pa: A History of the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Affectionately known as the "Ma & Pa," the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad was one of the country's longest running and best known "archaic" railroads, holding on to steam locomotion and other outmoded technologies well into the twentieth century. This paperback edition of Hilton's classic history includes a new introduction and epilogue in which the author recalls the line's final years of service. He also comments on the continuing interest of modelers, enthusiasts, and all who fondly remember the Ma & Pa.
