Illinois Central Railroad: 1854 Through 1960 Photo Archive
|
| By : Kim D. Tschudy |
Epitomized in song and story, the Illinois Central was arguably the most interesting and colorful railroad in America. Begun in 1851, the IC was the first land grant railroad in the United States. While other railroads ran east and west, the IC ran north and south, so when the Civil War began the IC was able to move 30% of all war material, supplies and troops to the battlegrounds of the South. This 10 1/4 x 8 1/2" softbound of IC locomotives and depots dating from 1854 to 1960 gives readers an intimate look at the railroad that called itself the Mainline of Mid-America.

Katy Northwest: The Story of a Branch Line Railroad
|
| By : Barriger John W. (Introduction), John W. Barriger, Fred W. Frailey (Introduction), Donovan L. Hofsom |
Katy Northwest was the first and finest in-depth study of a branch-line railroad. Originating as the Wichita Falls & Northwestern and later combining the Beaver, Meade & Englewood, under Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad's ownership, Katy's Northwestern system radiated north from Wichita Falls, Texas into the Oklahoma Panhandle like blood vessels in the country's agricultural muscle. The state and federally subsidized highway system siphoned off more and more of the tonnage that was available. By 1973 the track was so bad that even the final clean-up train derailed minutes...

Last Train to Paradise : Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossedan Ocean
|
| By : Les Standiford, Henry Morrison Flagler |
In Last Train to Paradise novelist Les Standiford has written a lively, felicitous account of the building of the Florida East Coast Railway, which, for a little over two decades, connected mainland Florida with Key West. Henry Morrison Flagler, John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil partner and, in many eyes, the true genius behind that company, embarked on the project in 1905 when he was 74 years old. The railroad, which crossed more than 150 miles of open sea, was an engineering feat nearly equal in scale and difficulty to the digging of the Panama Canal...
