Alabama Railroads
|
| By : Wayne Cline |
Wayne Cline traces the development of all the major lines as well as the most prominent short lines, from the day in 1832 when the first horse-drawn cars rolled over primitive tracks at Tuscumbia, to the night in 1971 at Sylacauga when the final operating order was issued for one of the 20thcentury's most famous streamliners. Along the way we meet the varied cast of colorful characters who pioneered the railway system that serves the state today. With more than 100 rare and vintage illustrations from the 19th and early 20th centuries, Alabama Railroads places Alabama's rail heritage in a national context and allows students of southern history as well as railroad enthusiasts to view this Deep South state from an entirely fresh perspective.

Altoona Action
|
| By : Jaime F.M. Serensits |
"Altoona Action" is a brand new hardcover book that features thirty years of railroading in and around the city of Altoona, Pennsylvania. "Altoona Action" presents brilliant color and black & white photography of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail, taken between the mid-1960’s and the mid-1990’s. In addition to Altoona, the book covers Horseshoe Curve, Gallitzin, Cresson, Tyrone and Spruce Creek. To complement the beautiful photographs, there are histories of Gallitzin and the long-forgotten industrial town of Bennington. You will also learn of two ways in which the Pennsylvania Railroad harnessed the power of the atom for their own use! Additionally, there are old and new maps of the area and excerpts from timetables. At the end of the book is a complete index and bibliography which will come in handy for those who wish to research related topics. There is also a story written by a gentleman who came to Altoona to work for the P.R.R. in 1885, and recorded many details of what life in Altoona was like more than 100 years ago!

Backwoods Railroads: Branchlines & Shortlines of Western Oregon
|
| By : D. C. Jesse Burkhardt |
Profusely illustrated and crafted with an attention to detail, Backwoods Railroads is an engaging description of contemporary branchline and shortline railroad operations in western Oregon. The focus is on the Willamette Valley and its bordering mountain chains—the Coast Range, the Cascades, and the Siskiyous. As the economic heart of the state, this area and its intricate railroad network is the closest Oregon comes to having the kind of trackage density found in many eastern and Midwestern states.
