The General & the Texas: A Pictorial History of the Andrews Raid, April 12, 1862
By : Stan Cohen, James G. Bogle
The General & the Texas: A Pictorial History of the Andrews Raid, April 12, 1862 On April 12, 1862, twenty Union soldiers and two civilians stole a train powered by a locomotive named "The General" just north of Atlanta. Their mission was to drive the train north to Chattanooga, destroying bridges, railways, and rolling stock along the way. Confederates, however, commandeered several engines, including "The Texas, " and initiated what became known as "The Great Locomotive Chase." Two movies and numerous books have been dedicated to this chapter in American history, but this is the first pictorial account of the incident.

The Great Northern Railway: A History
By : Ralph W. Hidy, Muriel E. Hidy, Roy V. Scott, Don L. Hofsommer
The Great Northern Railway: A History The Great Northern Railway highlights the changes brought on by economic, political, social, and technological advances, including world wars, increased competition from other modes of transportation, and tighter government restrictions. The first part of the book (1856–1916) examines the railway’s early strategies and philosophy, relations with employees, and vigorous campaigns to develop the service area. The second part of the history (1916–1970) offers an assessment of a dramatic period of transition for the railroad—international conflicts, the Great Depression, the rise of motor vehicles, increasing labor costs, and stronger unions. Illustrated with more than two hundred maps, period photographs, and drawings, the volume also includes appendixes listing the original track-laying history, track removals, ruling grades on main freight routes, and main line ruling grades from Minneapolis to Seattle.

 The Great Persuader
By : David Sievert Lavender
The Great Persuader The Great Persuader is the biography of a robber baron, the greatest railroad mogul of them all -- Collis P. Huntington, the Sacramento, California, storekeeper who, along with Leland Stanford and Mark Hopkins, parlayed $1,500 into America's first continental railroad. It is an almost unbelievable story of a high dream of fortune realized through highhanded practices -- an adventure which left the national treasury poorer by millions of swindled dollars, and America itself richer by a national railroad system which contributed greatly to the country's westward expansion. The Great Persuader is a powerful story of a remarkable man whose singleness of purpose and ruthless manipulation of men and money propelled the great enterprise forward against all odds.

The Last Spike : The Great Railway, 1881-1885
By : Pierre Berton
The Last Spike : The Great Railway, 1881-1885 In the four years between 1881 and 1885, Canada was forged into one nation by the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Last Spike reconstructs the incredible story of how some 2,000 miles of steel crossed the continent in just five years - exactly half the time stipulated in the contract. Pierre Berton recreates the adventures that were part of this vast undertaking: the railway on the brink of bankruptcy, with one hour between it and ruin; the extraordinary land boom of Winnipeg in 1881-1882; and the epic tale of how William Van Horne rushed 3,000 soldiers over a half-finished railway to quell the Riel Rebellion.
