| The Green Bay and Western: From Moguls to Alcos |
| By : Stan Mailer, Robert L. Hundman (Editor), Cathy H. Lee (Editor) |
Green Bay and Western Railroad began its long and once-troubled life just after the Civil War, in an attempt to capture trans-Mississippi trade for its fabulously wealthy owners. Competitive, modern and solvent today, GB&W finally threw off its luckless past in mid-20th Century, emerging as a time-saving bridge route between northwest and eastern states. The struggles of the smaller road west of Lake Michigan to exploit its advantageous shortcut and the coming of the prosperous automobile age are detailed with rare photos collected over many years. The road's handsome steam power is carefully illustrated from selected photos in the author's collection.
