| Norfolk Southern 1995 Review. |
| By : Scott Lindsey |
The purpose of this book is to review Norfolk Southern's current operations and how they have developed since 1982. Plenty has been written (deservingly) over the years about its steam program, but relatively little has been printed about the other 99.9 percent of NS activities. Although many scorn the black paint on the locomotives, NS's operations are very worthy of observation and go a long way toward explaining its success. The first section provides a brief review of NS's nine operating divisions. It is followed by four chapters describing how N&W and Southern integrated their operations over several key routes and gateways. A chapter is also devoted to the Thoroughbred Shortline Program, plus NS abandonments since the merger. Other chapters focus on current train designations and intermodal schedules. The book concludes with a complete roster of current NS locomotives and the dispositions that have occurred since 1982.
