| West Virginia's Coal & Coke Railroad: A B&0 Predecessor |
| By : Alan Clarke |
Built by Henry Gassaway Davis - the Grand Old Man of West Virginia at the turn of the 20th century - the 175-mile-long C&C railroad connected Charleston, WV, with Elkins in the mountains to the northeast. The route was intended to connect with George Gould's planned transcontinental railroad. Instead, a change in plans took the C&C through rugged country rich in coal, oil, and timber, and led to the development of many towns and villages in central West Virginia. This history book is based on day-to-day correspondence among the managers of the line to tell the story of railroading in the Mountain State.
