| The American Freight Train |
| By : Jim Boyd, Mike Schafer |
In The American Freight Train, author Jim Boyd documents the evolution of freight traffic by examining the various types of freight and how railroads have handled them since the first horse-powered tramways in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania began moving coal and aggregate over crude wooden rails early in the 1800s. Supporting this often intricate tale of the freight train are some 200 illustrations: vintage color and black and white photos from nearly all periods, diagrams depicting yard operations, and maps that show the relationships of early railroads to the lands they served.
