Diesels of the Union Pacific 1934-1982
By : Don Strack
Diesels of the Union Pacific 1934-1982 This volume is the first of several that will document the history of Union Pacific's fleet of diesel and turbine locomotives, from 1934 to today's roster. Although the current roster has been covered in two earlier works, the six-decade period that leads up to today can be split into two distinct eras. The first, the Classic Era, covers in two volumes the unit-by-unit roster from 1934, with the arrival of the first Streamliners, to 1982, when Union Pacific embarked on the first of its major mergers. Follow-on volumes will cover the Merger Era, from 1982 through UP's acquisition of the C&NW, to the 1996 merger with Southern Pacific.

Railfans : History

 Railways and the Victorian Imagination
By : Michael J. Freeman
Railways and the Victorian Imagination In this illustrated history, Freeman (Oxford Univ.) traces the cultural and social effect that railways had on 19th-century British society. By the 1860s, railways were physically, economically, and culturally pervasive--railroad tracks crisscrossed the country, and railway construction organized and harnessed vast sums of capital and tens of thousands of laborers. Profusely illustrated with photos, maps, and paintings, this book is a visual treat. The text stands on its own as a well-documented work of scholarship. Recommended for academic libraries collecting railroad or British history.

Railfans : Logging Railroads

Bull Whackers to Whistle Punks: Logging in the Old West (First Books_ Western U.S. History Series)
By : Sharlene Nelson, Ted W. Nelson
Bull Whackers to Whistle Punks: Logging in the Old West (First Books_ Western U.S. History Series) The Nelsons do an admirable job of describing logging in the West during the last half of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century. The daily lives of the loggers, their jobs, and the machinery and tools that were used are carefully explained in a lively, engaging style. Colorful logging terms are thoroughly defined, but the use of both boldface and italics to highlight words is distracting in the otherwise attractive book. Black-and-white or color photographs appear on nearly every page. The shots of immense trees and logs will amaze readers and may be useful in helping them understand the concerns of preservationists battling to save old-growth trees. A bibliography is appended.

Railway Maintenance Equipment: The Men and Machines That Keep the Railroads Running
By : Brian Solomon
Railway Maintenance Equipment: The Men and Machines That Keep the Railroads Running Railroad tracks take quite a beating, with countless tons of cold steel and freight rumbling over them day and night, wearing down rails and vibrating ties loose from their ballasts. This book reveals the special machinery railroads use to maintain and mend tracks and other property, as well as how the machines were developed and how they work. Each chapter tackles a different piece of maintenance equipment like tie pullers, spike drivers and rail grinders. Photos illustrate the machines in action, while detail shots depict the "business end" of each.

 Don Breckon's Country Railway Paintings
By : Don Breckon, Kevin Crooks
Don Breckon's Country Railway Paintings Don Breckon's railway paintings recreate the golden days of steam, when rail transport was an indispensable part of everyday life. Here he takes a nostalgic trip through the network of rural branch lines that criss-crossed the British countryside, connecting sleepy stations and country communities with towns and cities near and far. These paintings commemorate the links that flourished with the transportation of coal, milk and mail as well as passengers. They record the trains, fast and slow; the stations, viaducts, cuttings and embankments that sprang up; and the men who operated and maintained the railway. A spectacular gallery of over 20 full-page colour reproductions is complemented by detailed captions describing the background to each picture and texts from several contributing authors, recounting their first-hand experiences on the country railway - as passengers, employees and enthusiasts. Preliminary sketches and enlarged details show the development of the paintings and help to illustrate the artist's meticulous technique.
